by Kanti

The spirit of Diwali lit up Federation Square today as thousands gathered to celebrate the “Celebrate Diwali – Festival of Lights,” hosted by Celebrate India. From 11 AM until 10 PM, the iconic venue was transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, where attendees from diverse backgrounds embraced the joy and colors of this beloved Indian festival.

The day was packed with a rich variety of attractions, starting with the bustling Bazaar and Food Stalls opening at 11 AM. Guests indulged in traditional Indian street foods, explored unique handcrafted jewelry and art at the market stalls, and participated in cultural competitions, such as the Saree and Dhoti wearing contest.

Throughout the day, live entertainment enthralled the crowd. Performances included classical and folk dances by Indian associations, a Bollywood Dance Workshop, and mesmerizing live instrumental sets from Melbourne Tabla School. Special acts included a Rajasthani Dance Troupe brought by ICCR, India, and an Indo-African collaborative performance that highlighted the beautiful intersection of cultures.

The cultural immersion continued with Yoga and Meditation sessions from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by an energetic series of dance and musical performances. A special presentation of a dance drama depicting Lord Ram and Sita Ji’s return to Ayodhya captured the audience’s hearts, while the lively beats of a live band played tribute to renowned music director O.P. Nayyar.

The evening culminated in a breathtaking fireworks display, synchronized to the beats of a DJ, lighting up the Melbourne sky and concluding the day’s festivities with a magical glow. Thousands in attendance, from various cultural and national backgrounds, gathered to witness this spectacular display, which symbolized the triumph of light over darkness.

The Victorian Festival of Diwali continues to be a beacon of multicultural celebration, uniting communities across Melbourne with its dazzling performances, warm festivities, and cultural richness.
