The body of Rehana Parvin, a 37-year-old Queensland woman, was discovered in Bangladesh on September 12. Parvin had traveled to the country in June, as she regularly did, to manage her properties, according to local media reports.
Assistant Superintendent Ashraful Alam, leading the investigation, told NewsWire that police have applied for an arrest warrant and are seeking to extradite Parvin’s estranged husband, Awlad Hossain, from Queensland to Bangladesh. Hossain’s sister and a local “uncle” have been arrested in connection with the case, though they have not been charged.
Parvin, a mother of five, was found buried near a septic tank. She and Hossain owned multiple properties, including three in the Lockyer Valley near Brisbane and a 14-hectare property 300 kilometers west of the city.
According to property records, much of the couple’s assets in Bangladesh were registered under Parvin’s name. She had visited her parents’ home for one night before going to her in-laws’, after which her mother reported her missing. A week later, Hossain returned to Australia.
Bangladeshi authorities are continuing their investigation. Despite the absence of an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and Australia, there are mechanisms in place for extradition between Commonwealth nations, which Bangladesh has previously used.
In a press conference last month, Parvin’s mother expressed her grief, stating, “I worked hard to educate my daughter and send her to Australia, where she became a citizen. My daughter earned and acquired property in Australia.”
